Big idea from India

The number zero

Learn the Basics

  • Learn your times tables, because they make almost everything faster.
  • Number bonds to 10 and 20 help you add and subtract in your head.
  • To multiply by 9, multiply by 10 and subtract the number. For example 9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63.
  • Double and halve: 16 × 5 is the same as 8 × 10.
  • Always check your answer a second way.

Fun Facts

  • The idea of zero as a number came from India.
  • A googol is 1 followed by 100 zeros.
  • Prime numbers like 2, 3, 5 and 7 can only be divided by 1 and themselves.

How I Know This

  • I do maths at school and at home.
  • I practise speed-solving problems and solve them before most people finish reading them.
  • I like solving tricky number puzzles ahead of schedule.
